Zubeida is a Marwari horse, an extremely rare breed originating from the Marwar region of India. Originally serving as war horses, they were fiercely loyal and brave. Zubeida is easily recognizable for her bright blue eyes and the curved ears that distinguish this breed. After spending 2007 in a special exhibition of rare breeds at the Kentucky Horse Park, Zubeida, affectionately known as Zuzu, returned to her home on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. She successfully bred to Marwari stallion, Nazrullah, and foaled a beautiful filly named Ashwaria in December of 2008, continuing her breed and bloodline. Zubeida's tail hair has been generously donated by Francesca Kelly and the Kentucky Horse Park.
A lifelong lover of horses, Marilyn Sadler was drawn to the Bluegrass from Ohio for the region's beauty and its respect for the animal she adores. Gleaning the experience gained from years of owning, training and breeding Thoroughbred racehorses she has been able to bring to her equine portraits an intimacy that can only come from someone well acquainted with the industry. She has made her career creating portraits of beloved horses and commissioned work of family pets, and is completing her fifth Horsetails project with her representations of Ghostzapper and Zubeida.
Fifty-two artists from around the country have been chosen and each given small replicas of a violin and bow. Each artist has been assigned an unforgettable, beloved horse and has created a work of art. Artists have worked with paint, glass, metal, and other mediums. Their only charge was to embrace either the image or spirit of their horse. Horses include well-known Thoroughbreds, as well as other breeds represented in the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™.
Each piece will be on display at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™. During the Games, a silent auction will take place, with all proceeds go to the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra’s Partners in Education, a program benefiting the children in high-risk areas of Kentucky through music education.
