Toytown

[Picture]

He looked a bit like a hat-rack when we first saw him but I got on really well with him commented Toytown's rider Zara Phillips, eldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Together the pair placed second in the Burghley Horse Trials CCI**** and then went on to win individual and team gold in the 2005 European Eventing Championships, and individual gold and team silver in the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany. Unable to compete in the 2004 Olympics due to injury, another injury left the pair unable to compete in the 2008 Olympics in the final stages before the games. Toytown and Phillips won Team Gold in the 2007 European Eventing Championships at Pratoni del Vivaro, Rome, Italy. Most recently, they won 1st in the Powderham Castle Advanced and 2nd in the Somerley Park Open Intermediate. Toytown's tail hair has been generously donated by Zara Phillips.

Lloyd Kelly

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Lloyd Kelly has studied and exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. His works are in the corporate collection of Brown-Forman in Louisville, Kentucky and the State Department Art Bank in Washington, D.C. His murals are on display at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky and at the visitors center at Labrot & Graham Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky. As President of The American Academy of Equine Art, Lloyd was a natural choice for HORSETAILS 2010. About his portrayal of Toytown, he notes compositionally the image leaps like visual music from the instrument's face...horse and rider perform together in concert with controlled yet expressive energy. Indeed, this project has inspired Lloyd to begin painting on wooden panels and more carefully consider how one artistic discipline can inform another.

About the Project

Fifty-two artists from around the country have been chosen and each given small replicas of a violin and bow. Each artist has been assigned an unforgettable, beloved horse and has created a work of art. Artists have worked with paint, glass, metal, and other mediums. Their only charge was to embrace either the image or spirit of their horse. Horses include well-known Thoroughbreds, as well as other breeds represented in the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™.

Each piece will be on display at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™. During the Games, a silent auction will take place, with all proceeds go to the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra’s Partners in Education, a program benefiting the children in high-risk areas of Kentucky through music education.
