Seeking the Gold

[Picture]

Sired by Mr. Prospector at Claiborne Farm, Seeking the Gold had a racing career to uphold his name, with wins including the Grade 1 Super Derby, Dwyer Stakes, and Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes at age 3, and placing in the Breeders' Cup Classic and Haskell invitational as well as the Travers Stakes. With earnings of $2.3 million, Seeking the Gold was Mr. Prospector's third highest money earner. His own foals, in turn, have been extremely successful, including Belmont Stakes winner Jazil, Dubai Millenium, winner of the Dubai World Cup and Grade 1 races in England and France, and Wood Memorial Invitational winner Bob and John. Standing at Claiborne Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, he sired 18 crops before he was pensioned in 2008; among his foals are 18 Grade 1 winners, 5 champions and 8 millionaires. Seeking the Gold's tail hair has been generously donated by Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky.

Mary Wathen

After studying art at the University of Kentucky, Mary Wathen has combined her love of painting with a career in public service, producing art for the invitations of fundraising events and donating pieces to be auctioned at various fundraisers. Her work is included in the private collections of many notable Kentuckians including the Governor, and others in the United States and France. Wathen's violin of Seeking the Gold ties the horse's name to the ultimate goal of every horse entering the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrain Games, featuring medals representing each of the eight disciplines of the Games, with the ribbon and seal representing the United States and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

About the Project

Fifty-two artists from around the country have been chosen and each given small replicas of a violin and bow. Each artist has been assigned an unforgettable, beloved horse and has created a work of art. Artists have worked with paint, glass, metal, and other mediums. Their only charge was to embrace either the image or spirit of their horse. Horses include well-known Thoroughbreds, as well as other breeds represented in the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™.

Each piece will be on display at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™. During the Games, a silent auction will take place, with all proceeds go to the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra’s Partners in Education, a program benefiting the children in high-risk areas of Kentucky through music education.
