The chestnut gelding Funny Cide was bred in Kentucky and born in New York. During his career he won six races, including the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, and he finished 2nd in two races and 3rd in two, including the Belmont Stakes in his bid to win the Triple Crown. With the highest earnings of any New York bred horse, Funny Cide was twice named the New York Horse of the Year, and in 2003 was named the Eclipse Champion three year old male. Funny Cide's tail hair has been generously donated by Sackatoga Stables.

Born in Balestrate, Sicily and trained at the Instituto di Belle Arti in Palermo, Federico Pizzuro's paintings have been displayed in many galleries and commercial settings throughout Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan. His painting of Funny Cide, entitled " Musical Ode to an Iron Shoe," focuses on the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, as represented by a spiraling musical ribbon, and the horse shoe, reflecting the whole of the equestrian events, overseen by a female figure standing, the Muse of all creative endeavors.
Fifty-two artists from around the country have been chosen and each given small replicas of a violin and bow. Each artist has been assigned an unforgettable, beloved horse and has created a work of art. Artists have worked with paint, glass, metal, and other mediums. Their only charge was to embrace either the image or spirit of their horse. Horses include well-known Thoroughbreds, as well as other breeds represented in the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™.
Each piece will be on display at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™. During the Games, a silent auction will take place, with all proceeds go to the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra’s Partners in Education, a program benefiting the children in high-risk areas of Kentucky through music education.
